Demand for Procurement Software Expected to Rise

With the economy showing clear signs of improvement, the demand for procurement software is expected to rise.

Naturally, that’s good news for us here at Aravo, and I agree with Michael Koploy who points out at The Software Advice Blog, that there are several reasons why businesses will be accelerating their investment in procurement management systems over the coming year. BT Launches Climate Change Procurement Standard

BT wants to drive further engagement on climate change, and the company now expects its suppliers to actively manage and drive engagement in this area within their own supply chains, as well.

Last month, BT introduced a Climate Change procurement standard that will apply to all suppliers. One of the first of its kind in the UK, this new standard includes three minimum expectations to be undertaken by all contracted suppliers. Specifically, BT suppliers must: (more…)

Food Industry Challenged to Procure Raw Materials from Sustainable Sources

Danone, Unilever, Heinz and Nestlé are the most sustainable large food producers in the world, according to new research released earlier this month by Bank Sarasin.

The study, Food and sustainability: Will the seed bear fruit? highlights three central sustainability themes that affect food producers:

  • health and nutrition
  • sourcing more raw materials from sustainable agriculture
  • committing to fair working conditions.

And although the report found that many large food producers are developing sustainability strategies, Bank Sarasin concluded that most companies still have plenty of ground to cover on the path towards sustainability.

For example, the food industry as a whole faces significant challenges regarding the procurement of raw materials from sustainable sources. The world’s largest food producers purchase a significant share of global harvests –up to 20 percent of the world’s coffee, more than 10 percent of its tea, tomatoes and peas, and about 5 percent of its palm oil. Companies that have worked to secure large volumes of their raw materials from sustainable sources ranked high on Bank Sarasin’s matrix of sustainability criteria.

Sustainable procurement initiatives. Mention those three words to someone in business, and you’re likely to start a conversation about one of two things: either programs to meet international regulatory requirements or strategies to drive domestic sales and marketing efforts. For a few savvy companies, however, sustainable procurement initiatives are starting to mean a lot more. These companies are going beyond the CSR side of green and finding that sustainable supply chains can also mean increased profits, decreased risks, and an overall enhancement of their position in today’s ultra-competitive marketplace.
