Frito-Lay On Its Way to Largest Fleet of All-Electric Trucks In North America

By the end of 2011, PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay North America division will have the largest fleet of commercial all-electric trucks in North America.

Frito-Lay will be rolling out five new electric trucks in New York City this month. 21 more will be deployed this year. After that, an additional 150 will join the fleet next year.

The trucks, designed by Smith Electric Vehicles, generate zero tailpipe emissions and operate for up to 100 miles on a single charge. Smith Electric is a leader in the development of commercial electric trucks designed to operate at peak effectiveness in urban environments, and the company produces the Newton, which is the only all-electric commercial truck on the market. Companies Complete Test of New Global Greenhouse Gas Accounting Standards

Back in January, 62 companies from multiple sectors and 17 countries started road testing two new GHG Protocol standards developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

In June, the companies submitted written feedback on their usability along with final GHG inventory reports, and a summary of the feedback is now posted on the GHG Protocol website.

The two new GHG Protocol standards –the Product Lifecycle Accounting and Reporting Standard and the Scope 3 (Corporate Value Chain) Accounting and Reporting Standard – provide methods to account for emissions associated with individual products across their life-cycles and of corporations across their value chains.

PepsiCo Releases 2009 Corporate Citizenship Report

PepsiCo has released its 2009 Corporate Citizenship Report, and it contains dozens of ambitious global goals –47, in all –that will guide the company over the coming decade. These global goals focus on nutrition, environmental sustainability, and workplace practices and include specific, industry-leading commitments, such as reducing sugar, sodium and fat across the company’s food and beverage portfolio while increasing whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

Greenopia Picks Most Sustainable Beverage in US

What’s the most sustainable beverage wildly available to Americans today?

According to Greenopia.com, it’s Honest Tea of Bethesda, MD.

In fact, Honest Tea was the only mass-distributed, retail beverage to earn the coveted Greenopia 4-Leaf Rating in the website’s latest green beverage ratings research project.   Steaz and Santa Cruz Organic Sodas rounded out the top three. (more…)

PepsiCo Announces Global Water Goals

With a nod to World Water Day yesterday, PepsiCo has announced a new set of commitments aimed at providing access to safe water to three million people in developing countries by 2015. In addition, the company says it is will continue to promote greater water-use efficiency across its operations and to source water in ways that respect communities and ecosystems.

In 2007, PepsiCo set a global goal to reduce water consumption by 20 percent per unit of production by 2015. To date, the company has achieved a more than 15 percent improvement in water use efficiency as compared to the company’s 2006 baseline. PepsiCo has also: (more…)
