2010 Greendex Survey Finds American Consumer Behavior Least Sustainable of 17 Countries Studied
The National Geographic Society’s third annual consumer behavior tracking survey found that, for the third year in a row, American consumer behavior is the least sustainable of all 17 countries studied.
However, there were signs of improvement.
As in all but one of the 14 countries polled in both 2008 and 2010, the Greendex 2010: Consumer Choice and the Environment — A Worldwide Tracking Survey found that environmentally friendly consumer behavior in the U.S. has increased. In fact, consumers registering the largest 2010 versus 2008 increase in environmentally sustainable consumer behavior are the Indians, Russians and Americans.
Here’s a table with the rankings of all 17 countries. As in 2008, consumers in the emerging economies of India, Brazil, China and Mexico round out the top tier of the Greendex ranking. By contrast, the bottom six are all industrialized countries. (more…)
