Con Edison’s GHG Emissions Decreased 35 Percent Since 2005

Earlier this month, Consolidated (Con) Edison issued its 2010 Sustainability Report, detailing its long-term business strategy, an approach that relies on energy efficiency, renewable energy and recycling.

Con Edison is a New York-based utility that employs 15,000 employees, has $13 billion in revenues and holds $36 billion in assets. The company provides nine million people with electricity while balancing sustainability principles based on six fundamental points:

  • Insist on green behavior from employees.
  • Encourage green behavior to external stakeholders.
  • Meet customers’ demands for a greener lifestyle through innovation.
  • Partner with governments to create policies that match Con Edison’s sustainability vision.
  • Develop an infrastructure for renewable energy.
  • Include environmental and social values within its decision making process.

Big Blue Goes Big Green

Today’s blog post contains the first in a series of interviews with thought leaders in the world of sustainable business.

Our guest today is Dr. Peter Williams, Chief Technology Officer for IBM’s Big Green Innovations initiative. Peter is a management consultant with over 20 years’ experience, and is responsible for identifying environmentally focused businesses for IBM to either develop or participate in. He is personally responsible for assembling, maintaining and developing the portfolio of businesses included in the division.

Greening The Super Bowl

I am neither a Patriots fan nor a Giants fan, so for me last Sunday’s Super Bowl was not the gut wrenching affair it was for my friends in New England and Manhattan. It was an amazing game however, one for the record books in more ways than one. Rather than the final drive comeback or “almost perfect” Pats season, I’m referring to something completely different. I’m talking about the fact that this Super Bowl was the greenest sporting event in history. As I watched the game I could not help but think about what this means…namely the fact that “green” is seeping into every facet of our lives.
