Do CSR Programs Impact Employee Attitudes?

As I pointed out last week, many companies around the world are now developing strong, comprehensive corporate social responsibility programs.

But, have you ever wondered how these programs impact employee attitudes? What role, if any, do CSR initiatives play in, say, job retention and turnover?

Researchers at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) explored questions like those during their 2008-2009 World Leadership Study. They sampled the opinions of 2,215 workers around the globe and found that, as you might expect, perceptions of CSR do, indeed, make a unique and positive contribution to overall employee commitment and that a strong CSR program can positively impact employees’ perceptions and how they represent the company to customers and other stakeholders.

More Than Three-fourths of Consumers Say It’s Important for Companies to be Socially Responsible

More than three-fourths of consumers say that it is important for companies to be socially responsible, according to the second annual Corporate Social Responsibility Perceptions Survey, conducted by research-based consultancy Penn Schoen Berland in partnership with brand consulting firm Landor Associates and strategic communications firm Burson-Marsteller.

Study Shows Companies Post Online Sustainability Info, Need to Improve Timeliness

It’s becoming increasingly commonplace for companies to present environmental information on their websites, but most can do better on data substance and timeliness, according to new research from AltaTerra Research.

The new report, “Greening the Company Website: A New Era in Sustainability Reporting,” details the results from a study of the websites of 60 recognized corporate sustainability leaders, representing 13 different industries.

IBM Survey Shows Gap Between Corporate Sustainability Goals and Ability to Attain Them

I’ve been an advocate for environmental and broader corporate social responsibility issues for decades now, and I have to say, it’s encouraging to finally see indicators that suggest businesses are beginning to embrace sustainability. Recent reports show that companies are continuing with green initiatives despite the poor economic environment, and more and more frequently we’re hearing success stories that illustrate the multi-faceted business benefits of sustainability (cost savings, reduced GHG emissions, improved efficiencies, etc.).  

While data like this certainly indicates that we are moving in the right direction, new survey results released earlier this week reminded me of just how far we have left to go. On Monday, IBM published results of its second annual corporate social responsibility survey. The study polled 224 senior business executives and found that there are significant gaps between most companies’ sustainability goals and their ability to attain them.
