Time to Adopt a Holistic Approach to Green IT

Green IT Information technology is now a fundamental component of virtually every aspect of business, and that means that IT is also becoming an increasingly significant factor in your company’s overall carbon footprint. Any comprehensive environmental sustainability plan needs to include green IT initiatives, and in fact, some have even called green IT the number one priority for CIOs.

But, what’s the first thing you think of when you hear “green IT?” Do those two words conjure up visions of energy-efficient, cost-saving initiatives – and nothing more?

The $825 billion economic stimulus plan proposed by House Democrats earlier this month includes some $37 billion for spending specifically in the area of information technology.  In addition to creating jobs, this government investment is sure to foster more IT innovation and efficiencies –and not a moment too soon. Today, IT plays an increasingly complex role in virtually every business, and there’s no doubt that we’re all turning to IT more and more frequently for solutions regarding everything from security to sustainability.
