Companies Say They’ll Select Low Carbon Suppliers in the Future

Citing increased pressure from shareholders, half of the multinationals in a recent study said they expect, in the future, to select their suppliers based upon carbon performance.

Google Releases Its Carbon Footprint Information

For the first time ever, Google has released information about its carbon footprint.

Last week, the company revealed that in 2010 it generated a total of 1.46 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. As The Guardian points out, those emissions are slightly higher than the country of Laos in south-east Asia and about equivalent to the UN’s operational footprint.

Hotels Collaborating to Reach Consensus on Carbon Footprint Methodology and Reporting

For the first time ever, leaders within the hotel industry are collaborating to reach a consensus on a single methodology for calculating carbon footprints and consistent metrics for communicating emissions.

The International Tourism Partnership (ITP) and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) are now working together on a groundbreaking initiative to unite hotel industry sustainability efforts regarding carbon impacts. The new Carbon Measurement Working Group includes leading international hotel companies such as Accor, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Hilton Worldwide, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, InterContinental Hotels Group, Marriott International Inc, MGM Resorts International, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, Red Carnation Hotel Collection, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc, Premier Inn – Whitbread Group and Wyndham Worldwide.

Best Buy Releases 2011 CSR Report

Best Buy has released its sixth corporate responsibility report, which not only reveals the company’s performance highlights for fiscal year 2011, but also outlines several ambitious goals for the future.

For example, going forward, Best Buy is committed to:

  • recycling one billion pounds of consumer goods and
  • reducing its carbon footprint by 20 percent by 2020, regardless of how much the company grows.

Kellogg Company Has Already Exceeded 2015 Goal for Reducing Waste Sent to Landfill

After forging new partnerships with recyclers and mastering what the company calls “diligent efforts” at each of its facilities, Kellogg Company has already exceeded its aggressive 2015 goal for reducing waste sent to landfill.

More specifically, Kellogg reported a few weeks ago that nearly half of its facilities worldwide send 5 percent or less of the waste they generate to landfill, and that overall, the company has reduced its waste sent to landfill by 51 percent since 2005.

The highlights of Kellogg’s impressive waste reduction efforts are included in the company’s third global Corporate Responsibility Report, released last month on Earth Day. The report also includes updates on other key corporate responsibility initiatives in the environment, marketplace, workplace and community.
