Governments Must Be Proactive in Addressing Climate-Induced Migration

In 2010, extreme weather caused either the temporary or long-term dislocation of millions of people in Malaysia, Pakistan, the People’s Republic of China, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka.

An upcoming report from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will advise governments in these areas to expect even more of this kind of population disruption, what it’s calling “climate-induced migration.”

“No international cooperation mechanism has been set up to manage these migration flows, and protection and assistance schemes remain inadequate, poorly coordinated, and scattered,” the report, which ABD plans to use in early March, states. “National governments and the international community must urgently address this issue in a proactive manner.” (more…)

New Sustainable Supply Chain Centre for the Asia Pacific Region

Earlier this week, DHL and The Logistics Institute – Asia Pacific (TLI – Asia Pacific) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) launched the Sustainable Supply Chain Centre of Asia Pacific (SSCCAP), an initiative to drive sustainable supply chain development in the Asia Pacific region.

The first-of-its-kind in the region, DHLL says the SSCCAP will create practical business tools for the industry to establish benchmarks in areas of sustainable logistics solutions, involving research and education. (more…)

Port of Singapore Wins Best Green Service Provider – Seaport

The Port of Singapore was presented with the ‘Best Green Service Provider – Seaport’ award at the 24th Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards held earlier this month in Shanghai.

The award recognizes Singapore’s long-standing commitment to environmentally-friendly shipping and port activities. For instance, the country is compliant with environmental regulations set by national and global bodies  (such as all the Annexes of the International Maritime Organization’s MARPOL convention), and its consistent application of environmental standards is complemented by recent investments in green initiatives and technology. Specifically, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) driving maritime R&D in clean technologies in partnership with tertiary research institutions and the industry, supported by MPA’s S$100 million Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund.
