Retailers Improving Sustainability Efforts

January 12, 2010

This month’s RetailSolutionsOnline.com includes great commentary by Casey Chroust, EVP of RILA, the Retail Industry Leaders Association.

Chroust opens his piece, “The Future of Environmental Sustainability in Retail,” with this bold statement:

“Ten years from now, the term ‘environmental sustainability’ will have slipped entirely from the retail vocabulary. Why? Because by then the practices we define today as environmentally sustainable will have been so engrained in retail operations that they will simply be a part of how retail businesses operate and no longer require their own definition.”

(I certainly hope he’s right.)

Then, he goes on to list precisely how the retail business landscape is changing as retailers embrace a wide range of sustainability practices and supply chain innovations.

For instance, retailers are making progress in creating supply chains efficiencies, such as reduced –and more environmentally friendly –packaging and smart shipping. They’re also increasingly sourcing from vendors and suppliers that are committed to minimizing their environmental impact.

It’s a concise summary of how the retail sector is developing “green goals” directed towards compliance, energy efficiency, GHG emissions reductions, product stewardship, waste elimination, and recycling. More information on sustainability in the retail sector is available at posts here and here, as well.

Pity, as with the above, looks like the trend is in an encouraging direction.

And with a personal interest, one hopes in the area of designed-in reuse, too, not forgetting the positive impact this can have beyond CSR and PR to direct sales with a public who do respond to end-benefits, especially if ‘green’.
