Owens Corning Continues to Green Its Supply Chain

December 01, 2009

Owens Corning R-13+being+installedEarlier this month, Owens Corning announced significant advancements in the use of recycled content, end-of-life solutions, and the company’s collaboration with the recycling industry.

For instance, Owens Corning Fiberglas insulation products are now made of at least 50 percent recycled glass content, making them the highest certified recycled content fiberglass insulation in North America.

In addition, the company’s Cultured Stone and ProStone products are made from a minimum 35 percent recycled content and are the first manufactured stone veneer products to receive third party validation for recycled content.

Sure, using recycled content like this keeps glass and other manufacturing components out of landfills. But, according to a press release, it also helps reduce Owens Corning’s energy use and CO2 emissions (melting recycled glass requires significantly less energy, e.g.) –more proof that green initiatives drive positive impacts enterprise-wide.

Owens Corning has also teamed up with Heritage Environmental Services to develop a program to expand and simplify asphalt roof shingle recycling.

“One of the green product attributes that matters most is resource efficiency. This includes using recycled materials, producing products that can be practically recycled and reducing energy and material use in manufacturing,” says Owens Corning’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Frank O’Brien-Bernini. “As we work to green our operations and our products, we are finding ways to drive positive impact up and down the supply chain and in our communities through recycling efforts.”
