LG Display Renews Commitment to CSR

December 28, 2009

South Korea-based LG Display, the world’s second largest manufacturer of liquid crystal display (LCD) screens, sees its CSR-related activities as a “strategic investment,” according to an article in The Korea Times yesterday.

The company has recently completed several CSR initiatives. For example, in South Korea, LG Display has

  • Completely renovated computer facilities in local daycare centers,
  • Provided 1,200 LCD monitors to 35 elementary schools, and
  • Launched plans to support IT programs for colleges.

In Wroclaw, Poland, home to the company’s back-end LCD module plant, LG Display recently opened an “IT Room” inside the city’s library.

And, the company has joined with the ranks of LG Group’s other five affiliates to donate a combined 2.9 billion won to the Sichuan earthquake area through the Red Cross Society of China.

According to a company spokesperson quoted in the article, LG Display believes that CSR activities –particularly those that create partnerships with regional communities –will bring long-term benefits.

I found that sentiment echoed on the CSR page at the LG Display website:

Volunteering and giving back to the community is an integral part of LG Display’s culture. All employees are committed to enriching people’s lives and making a difference in the local communities in which they live and work. LG Display’s goal is to carry out various social contribution programs that will help its less-fortunate neighbors and reach out to the global community.

The company website also provides an eight-page document that outlines its ESH policy and performance.

While I’d like to see more details about LG Display’s environmental performance and specific goals for addressing climate change, it’s encouraging to see that the company is beginning to realize the business benefits of sustainability and is willing to take a leadership role regarding other CSR activities.
