Walmart Gives Suppliers CD to Help Explain Sustainability

Many companies remain somewhat perplexed by the term “greening the supply chain,” and so Walmart is giving all its private brand suppliers a CD set to help explain life-cycle assessment (LCA) and other sustainability initiatives.

The CDs are a compilation of edits from the series ‘Ecological Awareness,’ which was originally released by More Than Sound Productions. The new CD set is an introductory, made-for-business audio series called “The Radical Horizon: A Primer on Business Sustainability.”

Ingersoll Rand Surveys Suppliers About Their Environmental Impact

progress_is_greener Ingersoll RandTaking a page from Walmart’s playbook, Ingersoll Rand has launched a survey designed to capture data relating to the environmental impact of its supplier network.

According to a press release,  the data will be used to assess the current state of key environmental factors across Ingersoll Rand’s supply chain and to help suppliers reduce the environmental impact of their business practices as part of the company’s long-term sustainability efforts.

The survey targets the company’s top 500 global suppliers, representing 80 percent of Ingersoll Rand’s direct material spend, and will collect data relating to: (more…)

Survey: 93 Percent of Companies Have, or Are Developing, a Sustainable Packaging Policy

If you’re in the sustainable packaging sector, the good news just keeps coming.

Last week, the Tompkins’ Supply Chain Consortium released news that its survey of top retail- and manufacturing-related companies found that more than 65 percent of companies have some type of sustainable packaging policy in place. Another 28 percent are currently developing a policy.

That means nearly all (93 percent) of the companies polled are making a commitment to sustainable packaging . (more…)

Samsung Recycles 12-millionth Pound of e-waste in 2009

With a tip of the hat to America Recycles Day (which was yesterday, November 15, in case you missed it), Samsung Electronics America, Inc. announced last Friday that during this month, it has recycled its 12 millionth pound of e-waste for the year.

This milestone was achieved through Samsung Recycling Direct©, the company’s 50-state recycling program, which allows consumers to drop off their consumer electronics products at over 200 permanent drop-off centers in the U.S. (more…)

Survey: Companies Rank Supply Chain Sustainability Below Improving Customer Service and Reducing Risk

Despite the downturn in the economy, leading companies across all industry sectors are continuing to incorporate sustainability into their overall business plans. However, a recent survey of supply chain executives by Research and Markets found that sustainability is not yet a core part of most companies supply chain strategies. Instead, sustainability is a mid-level priority, behind improving service to customers, reducing supply chain risk, and managing and optimizing an extended supply network.
