AMR is First US-based Passenger Airline to Release GRI Level C Corporate Responsibility Report
Yesterday, AMR, the parent company of American Airlines and its regional affiliate, American Eagle, released its first fully-integrated Corporate Responsibility Report.
This is the first triple-bottom-line report issued by a U.S.-based passenger airline that meets the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Level C reporting.
The 90-page document, “Global Community, Global Commitment,” provides insight into AMR’s environmental, social, and economic performance in calendar year 2008. Highlights of the report include:
Environmental Performance
- AMR led the industry as the first major passenger airline to join the EPA’s Climate Leaders program. American has committed to a 30% reduction in GHG intensity ration by 2025 and says it will work with Climate Leaders to set a mid-range goal to help meet this long-range target.
- Last year, the employee-led Fuel Smart fuel conservation program created a company record run-rate savings of 111 million gallons of fuel and 2.3 billion pounds of CO2.
- The fleet renewal efforts introduced in the 2007 Environmental Responsibility Report expanded as the airline began replacing its MD-80 fleet with new 737-800s.
- AMR emitted 29 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) in 2008, a decrease of 5% from the previous year.
Corporate Citizenship
- AMR connects mature and developing markets in more than 50 countries and embraces diversity in its operations with the help of 16 Employee Resource Groups.
- In 2008, American contributed more than $28 million of in-kind and cash support to hundreds of nonprofit organizations that varied in size, mission, and geographic scope.
- American Airlines Miles for Kids in Need((R)) program provided air travel assistance to more than 300 children, issuing more than 600 tickets to kids in need and their families.
- In 2008, more than 2,600 employees donated upwards of $635,000 to nearly 1,000 organizations throughout the United States through the non-profit American Giving Employee Charitable Fund, Inc.
Economic efforts
- In 2008, AMR generated nearly $24 billion in revenue and maintained more than 84,000 high-quality jobs. This includes an industry-leading commitment to performing both first- and third-party maintenance in house.
- AMR directly and indirectly contributed $115 billion to the U.S. economy and accounted for more than 900,000 jobs.
- In 2008, AMR contributed $3 billion in taxes and fees to the U.S. government and public entities, and an additional $900 million to non-U.S. government and public entities.
“As a company, we strive to make American and American Eagle good places to work, good corporate neighbors, and to make a positive impact in the communities we serve. These values are at the heart of who we are and who we have been for more than 80 years,” says Peggy Sterling, American’s Vice President – Safety, Security and Environmental. “The publishing of this report is a major milestone along AMR’s journey to become a better corporate citizen. Through this report, we are showcasing our commitment to being a responsible corporation for everyone we touch – our employees, our customers, and the communities where we work, live and play.”
