Video: Sustainability at Jewson, the UK’s Leading Timber and Building Materials Supplier

July 13, 2009

With more than 500 locations across the United Kingdom, Jewson is the UK’s leading timber and building materials supplier. What’s more, the company knows a little something about the different facets of the word “sustainability,” too. First of all, Jewson has been in business for over 170 years –the first branch opened in Cambridgeshire in 1836. Secondly, the company has made a name for itself with an unwavering commitment to eco-friendly building solutions.  As part of the Saint-Gobain Building Distribution Group, Europe’s number one building materials distributor, Jewson plays an important role in helping customers source products and services for sustainable construction.

Case in point: Materials Handling World Magazine reports that Jewson has had overwhelming success with its pioneering imitative to recycle and reuse more than 13,000 pallets each week. Launched in December 2008, the program includes pallets collected from both  Jewson stores and from customers’ sites. This initiative has: 1) kept hundreds of thousands of pallets out of landfills, and 2) saved a collective supply and disposal cost of approximately $84,000 each week.

This pallet recycling program is just one example of the company’s commitment to sustainability. You can read more about Jewson’s efforts at their website and/or click below to hear directly from  Steve Milward, Jewson’s Sustainability Director.
