The Debate Over Waxman-Markey

June 18, 2009

Debate over “The American Clean Energy and Security Act” –better known as “Waxman-Markey,” after its sponsors, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Ed Markey (D-MA) –is heating up. And, if you’re looking for a source to bring you up to speed on the pros and cons of this legislation from an environmentalist’s perspective, you won’t find a better place than today’s post at Yale Environment 360.

For months now, the controversial Waxman-Markey bill has been criticized for either doing too much or too little to cap and regulate emissions of CO2 in the U.S. Even environmentalists can’t agree. Some think compromises have created legislation that is fatally flawed. Others feel Waxman-Markey is an absolutely critical, if modest, first step.

Yale Environment 360 asked 11 leaders in the environmental and energy fields to share their thoughts on Waxman-Markey, and the result is an opinion piece that thoroughly covers the debate. The 11 who offered their insights are: Angela Ledford, Phil Radford, Joe Romm, Denis Hayes, Brent Blackwelder, David Jenkins, Charles T. Drevna, Liz Martin Perera, Michael Brune, Paul Hawken, and Michael Nob.
