Pew Center Publishes Guide to Low-Carbon Technologies

June 09, 2009

Since GHG emissions come from a variety of sources throughout the US economy, it only follows that climate change mitigation will likewise depend on a variety of technologies and solutions. For instance, in the electricity sector –which researchers estimate contributes about one-third of all national GHG emissions – GHG emission reductions could arise from strategies, such as the development of renewable sources, improving efficiencies, and lessening demand. By contrast, in the industrial sector, GHG emissions can be reduced by new technologies that impact industrial processes, such as steel and cement production.

To help put all of this into perspective, the Pew Center on Global Climate Change has published a “Climate TechBook”, a e-guide to low-carbon technologies and climate change solutions.

The Climate TechBook is a great resource for information regarding GHG emissions and climate change mitigation strategies. For example, here’s how each of the five economic sectors contribute to total US GHG emissions:

Electricity  34%
Transportation  28%
Industrial  20%
Residential and Commercial  11%
Agriculture  7%

The Climate TechBook goes on to take an in-depth look at climate change mitigation opportunities in each sector. You’ll find quick facts, summaries of current technologies, policy options, obstacles to further development, and extensive lists of links to related resources for additional information. I suspect I’ll find myself referring to this guide often as debate over the Waxman-Markey climate change bill continues in Washington –and in boardrooms across the country.
