CAPS Research Offers Five Steps to Achieve Supply Management Environmental Sustainability
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all of the hype surrounding everything “green” these days. That’s why I’m always on the lookout for straight-talk about the issue. I’m looking for best practices and practical strategies that can help you get started on your sustainability plan, and today I found a great no-nonsense post over at Knowledge@W.P. Carey. The article, titled “A Roadmap for Sustainable Supply Management,”outlines five steps that CAPS Research recently developed to assist buyers and suppliers in establishing supply management environmental sustainability.
CAPS Research suggests you:
- Define environmental sustainability. “Before firms can set up strategies and tactics and develop metrics for supply management environmental sustainability, they have to define what environmental sustainability means to their organization,” says James Hershauer, management professor and senior research associate for CAPS Research, the W. P. Carey School’s strategic supply management center. “If your CEO has one understanding of what environmental sustainability means and your CPO has another understanding, and these ideas differ from what your engineers and your marketing people think about environmental sustainability, you can all get together and think you’ve reached an agreement about your company’s plans, and then all four of you go out and do something totally different.”
- Determine your corporate sustainability commitments, including both upstream and downstream processes.
- Create a plan. You’ll need a team, and the team will need a mandate from executive management. “Start by finding someone to drive the sustainability effort, and then be sure that the whole issue is in the mindset of every employee,” Hershauer advises in the article. It’s critical that sustainability cuts across all facets of your organization.
- Create goals and metrics so you can both measure internal sustainability efforts and track targets for suppliers, as well.
- Run pilot supplier partnerships.
