Staying Green in a Down Economy

February 27, 2009

Think sustainability is slowing down because of economic tough times? Think again. For many businesses, sustainability is still going strong, despite what some skeptics predicted. If you’re curious as to why, I suggest you take a look at Brendan May’s most recent short article at Climate Change Corp.

May, who is Managing Director of Planet 2050, discusses the five key reasons behind sustainability’s staying power. His list includes:

  • Legislation
  • Cost savings
  • Supply chain pressure
  • Media coverage/NGO scrutiny
  • Investor pressure

Over the past month or so, lots of columnists and research groups have started to weigh in on how/why corporate environmental, social, and governance programs are weathering the current economic turmoil. These topics are relevant to all of us, so stay tuned. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be writing more about the latest opinions and reports.

BTW, you may also want to check out Brendan May’s blog at Planet 2050. According to the website, “2050” is the year when the earth reaches a tipping point and we will need two planets to sustain our current consumption levels.
