Who Needs Tight Security in Their Supply Chains?

January 16, 2009

You do.

With today’s complex, global supply chains, security isn’t just important –it’s absolutely critical.

For proof, take a look at this op-ed piece that appeared in yesterday’s online version of The Star, one of the leading English-language newspapers in Malaysia.

Titled “Tighter Security in Supply Chain Needed,” Hanim Adnan, assistant news editor, reports that crude palm oil (CPO) is now a prime target for looters. In particular, CPO in-transit from the mill to the refinery has become an easy mark. The photo below shows how CPO can be siphoned off into metal drums and then replaced with water or other substances (which aren’t necessarily edible or even non-toxic).

The article recalls the scandal that erupted in 1999 when CPO tainted with diesel oil was shipped from Indonesia to the Netherlands.

It also points out that losses from stolen Malaysian CPO amounted to approximately RM325mil (almost $91million) in 2008. Malaysian official appear to be stepping up efforts to combat CPO crime, but The Star is calling on them to do even more.

“…it is imperative that more stringent measures in terms of quality assurance and product security are implemented throughout the entire CPO supply chain…” , Adnan writes.

The same holds true for all aspects of your company’s supply chain, too.
