Delhaize Group’s First CR Report

October 05, 2008

The ink was still wet on my blog about sustainability initiatives among grocery retailers when I ran across the news that international food retailer,Delhaize Group has published its first-ever Corporate Responsibility Report, titled "A Healthy Approach to Life".

Headquartered in Belgium, Delhaize Group operates about 2,545 supermarkets in seven countries in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. In the U.S., we know Delhaize Group as the supermarkets Hannaford and Food Lion.

Compiled using the GRI Standard Disclosures and Reporting Principles (version 3), the Delhaize Group’s report does a nice job of breaking down the company’s CR performance into three core fields, each with its own strategic priorities:

1.   Healthier products

  • ensuring rigorous food safety
  • sourcing responsibly
  • promoting healthy eating

2.   Healthier people

  • enriching the health of associates and communities
  • embracing diversity, developing talent
  • helping the disadvantaged

3.   Healthier planet

  • conserving energy
  • reducing GHG emissions
  • wasting less; recycling more

This 53-page CR report is presented in a format that’s very easy to read, with graphics that highlight not only Delhaize Group’s achievements, but their challenges and future goals, as well.

As I pointed out before, there seems to be a lot of variability regarding sustainability initiatives and CSR reporting among grocery retailers today. So, kudos to Delhaize Group. It’s great to read about another major corporation that’s making a commitment to a sustainable future.
