Many of us remember the environmental "push" in our country during the 1970s: activism, legislation and behavior change. The 1980s and the 1990s represented a divergence away from this paradigm as organizations and individuals lost a sense of community and focused instead on individual gain. I don't think that the pendulum swung as far in European countries ... for a variety of reasons. So, it may be "easier" for Europeans to get on the sustainability bandwagon because it has been closer to the surface all along. Our challenge in achieving significant success in sustainability is to renew the communal sense and understand that everything we do affects each other ... today and tomorrow.
